Hosting its fourth ceremony to date, the Dragon Awards proved to be a splendid occasion for all attendees and guest present. From being able to spot notable authors and artists almost in every direction (there’s nothing quite like sitting a few chairs away from both Claudia Gray and Kevin J. Anderson), it had the distinct atmosphere of an industry event, and it certainly came off that way. Utilizing the ballots of over 10,000 fans who submitted their entries, the Dragon Awards was immediately touted as a ceremony for the fans, and it indeed was very much just that. Celebrating science fiction and fantasy literature, gaming, film, and TV shows, there, much like the convention itself, was something for everyone to get excited about, including a few special honor awards like the Julie Award which was presented to comic artist and illustrator legend George Pérez. Even the Russo Brothers, though not in-person, made an appearance after Avengers: Endgame won for Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Movie, sending along a message with a presenter at the ceremony and an iconic figure in his own right, Brandon Sanderson. For the winners who attended this year’s Dragon-Con,they all gave rousing speeches that didn’t have a scent of dishonesty. From the standing ovation that author David Weber received for his moving speech to George Pérez discussing how fortunate his career in the industry has been, it’s quite clear that Dragon Awards does have a unique place at Dragon-Con, one that doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon.
