Following its recent slew of premieres, Disney's DUMBO is finally about to hit theaters, precisely in one week on March 29th. After several lackluster trailers, the buzz around the film is still drab at best, with all the attention that Disney has been garnering being over their deal over 20th Century Fox and AVENGERS: ENDGAME's ramping up in marketing. A fantastic word of mouth from the critics and the audiences may be the only way to actually kickstart some conversation about the film, and after some dull and "meh" social media reactions, Disney has finally dated a review embargo for March 26th at 12pm EST.
This is a mere three days before the nationwide release, marking a move similar to both THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS, sitting at a dismal 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, and CAPTAIN MARVEL, with a much better 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. And for the latter, that was "supposedly" to prevent spoilers from leaking about the film. But either way, neither of those examples were massive critical successes like BLACK PANTHER or INCREDIBLES 2 were, which means that Disney expects DUMBO to land somewhere in the range of CAPTAIN MARVEL and THE NUTCRACKER. This could potentially mark yet another failure in their actual Walt Disney Studios division, a division that has been spewing out some rather lackluster releases, with THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS being the most recent. It's hard to see how DUMBO will be able to break this trend and set the division back on track, but ultimately, we still have to wait for critics around the nation, including representatives from HBB Reviews itself, to break if DUMBO soars or tumbles.
DUMBO Hits Theaters on March 29th, 2019.
