OpenEmu (Mac) Software Review

For many retro gamers, experiencing their favorite games on outdated consoles such as the NES, GameBoy Advance, SNES, or Nintendo 64 has become a troubled matter. Relying on Nintendo’s classic editions of the NES and SNES has quickly becomes unreliable due to low inventories of the products themselves. Ultimately, gamers can find a solution to their void of retro gaming. Easily the best retro gaming emulator on the market, OpenEmu is a simple, intuitive application that takes many retro consoles, such as the Nintendo 64 or NES, and plays the games on each respective system like no other software on the market.

Upon opening OpenEmu, users will find a total of twenty-eight consoles available. From the Atari 2600 to even the Sony PSP, users will have a wide range of systems available. The number of systems is jaw-dropping and easily makes the application worth it for the sheer amount of content that OpenEmu is able to support. In a matter of seconds, users can quickly switch from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to Crash Bandicoot. It is a feeling that never gets old and is what most modern gaming streaming services have been striving for and failing to achieve. In addition, most “iso” and roms found on the internet generally work with the system. Adding new games is easy and they often work with little issue. Just adding the file via downloads or documents is simple and takes minimal effort and time to get the game running. Ultimately, OpenEmu is one of the most intuitive gaming platforms available, even including consoles.

Regarding the consoles available on OpenEmu, some may notice the absence of several key outdated consoles. However, with the addition of set cores, including the popular Gamecube and Wii emulator Dolphin, these consoles can be added seamlessly with the program. However, regarding the Dolphin cores, these did not work with the program and didn’t read any of the files I had available.

Ultimately, this review proved to be shorter than expected. That is for one simple reason. OpenEmu is an impressive success. It is a system that every software should strive for. There is a seamless intuitiveness that easily teaches and instructs users to an experience that is like no other on the market. There are other emulators to play some of the legendary retro games, but none is as easy to operate as OpenEmu. Outside of a few bugs and glitches that made game-start up difficult, OpenEmu is a seamless experience that every gamer should try out.
