Set for an original release date of March 15th was the Academy Award-winning Jordan Peele directed Us. Featuring an all-star cast in Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke in leading roles, the film follows the seemingly normal summer vacation of a four-member family and the quick descent into madness that they encounter with the arrival of four mysterious figures. In classic horror film fashion, these four figures are revealed to look exactly like the family, with their subtle behaviors and details all being mimicked.
Thanks to Jordan Peele’s fantastic Get Out, Us was always high on most anticipated lists, heading into 2019. The filmmaker won an Academy Award for his original screenplay in Get Out due to the film’s underlying cultural and social messages. And with an official trailer being released on Christmas Day in 2018, Us has garnered attention for its potential to be just as thrilling as his previous work.
Attendees of this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas will have the opportunity to attend the world premiere of the film at the event’s opening night on Friday, March 8th. Us is being marketed as the headliner of the entire event, film-wise, and will definitely be the central point of conversation heading into March 8th. Currently, it is the only film that has a confirmed date and time at SXSW, but will surely be followed up by others soon.
As a response to the announcement, Universal Pictures also confirmed that Us will be moved back one week in its national release date, shifting from March 15th to the accurate March 22nd date. This places it two weeks behind Marvel Studios’ juggernaut Captain Marvel, which had ticket sales kick off just last night, and the SXSW world premiere. The decision may be intentioned to give the film some space between a blockbuster as large as Captain Marvel and could very well help it financially. Regardless, Us is still eagerly anticipated by fans and industry members alike, who cannot wait to see Peele’s continued spin on the horror genre. Us hits theaters on March 22nd, 2019.
Us, from Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele (Get Out), stars Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband (Winston Duke), and their children for a summer getaway.
Haunted by an unexplainable trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.
After a day with friends (Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker), the Wilsons return to their vacation home to discover the silhouettes of four figures standing in their driveway. Us pits an ordinary American family against a terrifying opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.
